Designed under the direction of Howard Hughes, this 180-ton aircraft, popularly nicknamed the "Spruce Goose" (being built of plywood), was the largest flying boat ever built, and was, at the time, the largest airplane ever built. Its intended role was to ferry vast amounts of troops and cargo across the Pacific. Piloted by the eccentric millionaire, with D. Grant as co-pilot, the Hercules made only one flight. This was in a straight line measuring about one mile over Los Angeles Harbor on November 2, 1947.
