Lockheed F-104 Starfighter airplane model. The F-104, a supersonic fighter designed for air superiority, came in two main variants. It was armed with a six-barrel M-61 20mm Vulcan cannon for tactical operations and equipped with heat-seeking Sidewinder missiles for day-night interception. The F-104's development started in 1952, and the first XF-104 took flight in 1954. It broke the world speed record on May 18, 1958, at 1,404.19 mph, and set an altitude record of 103,395 feet on December 14, 1959. The Starfighter was the first to simultaneously hold world records for speed, altitude, and time-to-climb.

The USAF acquired around 300 Starfighters in both single and dual-seat models. Additionally, over 1,700 F-104s were produced domestically and internationally through a military aid program, serving nations such as Canada, West Germany, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Taiwan, and Japan.
