Charles "Chuck" Yeager demonstrated a blend of cockiness and fearlessness, which served him well in both the War and later as a test pilot. Yeager ended the war with 11.5 aerial victories but was shot down, evading capture with the help of the French Resistance. As a test pilot after the war, Yeager achieved fame as the first man to break the sound barrier! This particular Mustang was coded B6-Y and was the third of Yeager's Mustangs, all named after his sweetheart, "Glamorous Glen"! Unfortunately, Glamorous Glen III, the famous P-51 Mustang flown by Chuck Yeager at air shows nationwide, crashed on September 6, 2001 near Lincolnton, N.C. Yeager was not in the aircraft at the time of the accident. The WWII-era fighter's engine seized after losing its coolant near the Lincoln County Airport. Pilots Jeff Michael and Butch Cauble knew that an engine failure was imminent, removed the canopy and unfastened their seatbelts before being flipped over and dumped out below 1,500 feet as the aircraft's engine seized.
