The A5M was the first monoplane shipboard fighter adopted by any nation anywhere. It was also the direct forerunner of the magnificent A6M Zero, but never achieved the latter type’s notoriety. Still, it ruled the skies over much of China in its heyday during the Sino-Japanese conflict, and nearly all WWII Japanese naval pilots who became aces on the Zero either trained on the A5M or cut their combat teeth flying it over China. Wingspan 19 3/4 inches, Length 14 inches.
